Nikon SD-9 3rd Party Review SF-18

Having got disheartened by the sheer weight of Nikon’s recent price rises especially on some of the Accessories, i decided to go on the hunt for a 3rd Party battery system for my flashgun (SB-900). The current UK Price of the SD-9 is 190 UK Pounds. A very heavy price to buy for a battery pack!

I had a look on ebay and noted several 6 cell versions that claimed they were SB-900 compatible, which didnt seem correct to me as the SD-9 is an 8 cell battery pack. Then i spotted another from a seller called GreenLife selling an “External Battery Pack For Nikon SB-800 900 SD-9/8A bj04″ and for 68 US Dollars inc Shipping to the UK from Singapore, it was mine. It is made by Yongnuo a Chinese company who appear to reverse engineer most camera accessories, however i did take a risk as the images in the auction weren’t clear on how it connected the the SB-900 as the official SD-9 only has a single connector (I think).

About a week later the item arrived, (too late for to take to France) very impressed with the build quality it feels the same as the Nikon, more importantly it is CE approved (well its stamped on it anyway) It comes with a nice case with a velcro lid and push cap base, so you can change the batteries on the go. It also came with a mounting screw so you can attache the pack horizontally on the base of your camera securing the pack to the camera via a screw into the tripod socket. Performance is fantastic, i get no heat build up from it at all. The batteries in the SB-900 control the display etc and the power for the actual flash is drawn from the 8 cells in the battery pack itself. The instructions are short, and it does say not to shoot more than 12 shots in a sequence without letting it cool, there is a thermal cut out on the back though. But i have’nt found the batteries getting hot during use. I have been using AA 2700 mAh Maha Energy Batteries, i also use one of there chargers.

Connecting to the SB-900 is easy, the one cable fits nicely into the front of the SB-900 and the other goes into the sync socket on the side of the SB-900. I am unsure why the sync cable is required but i connected it anyway. Either way the whole package was cheap and works flawlessly with the SB-900 with no issue at all. Here are some pics of the unit. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Thanks

Model Nos SF-18 for Nikon bj04 made by Yongnuo Digital

Update 22/6/09 :- The battery pack works fine with the SB-900 in all modes. I have used it as remote mode and master without any problems.

Update 23/6/09 :- The sync cable that appears on this unit (bj04) does not appear on Nikon’s SD-9 however i have tested it and it makes no difference if its plugged in or not, the unit performs in the same way.

Please post questions below and i’ll respond ASAP. Cheers

Rick - Why mess with it ? If this were a “no-brainer” then fine. But why try to make something work that does not. Figure all the shots you take and then figure the savings per shot. It;s miniscule. It only costs a bit more to do it right the first time.
Nikon is my brand. I do not fool around. The time I waste “evaluating” costs me more than the savings.

Jamie - Just wanted to confirm that the

80DX SD-8A 8 bj04

from greenlife works flawlessly with the SB-800. Found this review today after trying to get the unit to work – didn’t realise you still have to have a full complement of batteries in the flash as well as in the bj04… Doh!

Doesn’t work in REMOTE off camera setting but works in SU-4 off camera setting…

Off to try it with my el-cheapo ebay radio slave triggers…. BOOM!

bala - Hi i get my sf18 and try on my sb900, i didn’t get any improvement in recharge time, the red light blink (very dim) but no improvement, when i try it on my old sb28, it did recharge much faster with the red light blink normally (so the sf18 work but not compatible with sb900), then I email the company that make it and they confirm it is not compatible

admin - It seems many peoples experiences with the SB-900 are hit and miss.
I use Maha 2700 mAh batteries. The red light on the side of the battery pack doesnt work for me, however it does supply enough power to my SB-900. I haven’t suffered any overheat issues but i dont heavily use it to see that anyway. From the test i have done it didnt stop. As there is a huge difference in price, in my opinion, it is still worth trying to see if it suits your needs, if not then a trip to your local Nikon stockist and take a pile of cash with you for the SD-9! :-)

Jill Love - So after reading everyone’s posts, I’m confused! Does this item work well for several hours with the SB-900 or doesn’t it in your opinion? As far as batteries go, I have several different mAh configurations and although I don’t mix them, I don’t see a lot of difference between them. I have not found any as powerful as yours though. Does this make a significant difference? Thanks so much.

John Wood - Here is Greenlife’s response:

“Thank you for your email.
We have tested the battery pack with our Nikon SB900, but it seems not fully compatible with the SB900, because it is work discontinuously (work on the 1st recharging and stop working on 2nd, and then recharging after the 3rd flash, etc.)
If you have any question, please feel free to contact us.

Best Regards,
Greenlife”

John Wood - I bought two of these units SF-18 from Greenlife and found the plug fitted both the SB800 and SB900 perfectly.

It reduced the recycle time in the SB800 by half to about 2-3secs
and made no difference to the SB900 at all.

The SB900 internal batteries heated up as normal and the cycle time was not changed at all. The red light on the SF-18 came on while the unit was recharging. I used one plug and two plugs but it made no difference.

I use lithium batteries.

I am disappointed that it does not work for the SB900 as that is the main speedlight that I bought the packs for.

I have contacted Greenlife to see what they say but they only advertise it for the SB800 so I am not sure they will be able to help.

duane - my apologies to Dennis Davis. But the “davies” should be “Dennis”

duane - thanks for this post. I’ve been looking for reviews about this item.
Aside from e-bay, I found this sold in amazon by UK Highland( http://www.amazon.co.uk/SF-18-Flash-battery-nikon-SB-800/dp/B002FCSVH0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1248038055&sr=8-1 )

One thing I noticed though is this was described for nikon flash use other than SB900. This further explains Davies’s comment. I’ve read that SD8a can be used for an SB-900 with a lower flash recycle time but an SD-9 cannot be used on SB800.

Dennis Davis - After comparing this bj04 unit to my SD-8a (and the SD-9) I realize that this is not a replacement for the SD-9 but is an 8 battery replacement for the SD-8a.

The plug on the SD-9 is shaped differently and will not fit into the SB-800 or older, just the SB-900. The SD-9 also lacks the side plug.

Dennis Davis - I bought the SF-18 after reading your post on dpreview but mine has a problem in that the three prong plug won’t fit into the front of the SB-900 without being forced in (and I mean forced) and once it’s in it won’t come out, I had to get a pair of pliers to pull it out. I also noticed that the red light on the unit only flashed every other time when the flash was fired and on those times the red light didn’t come on the recycle time was much longer. I tried this out on my SD-8a and the red light went on every time the flash fired.

BTW, the red light only went on when the side plug was plugged into the side of the SB-900.

Thank you!
Dennis

admin - Sorry i cannot test with an SB-800, i would suggest you buy the other one Green Life sell which has 6 AA cells thats the correct one for the SB-800. Hope that helps, thanks for the comments. Remote triggering works fine with the battery pack i used it outdoors this evening without an issue.

catalin - Thanks for this great review. I was looking forward to buy one of this toys, but then I read some posts on flickr that the do not work in REMOTE mode (off camera – strobist preffered- mode :) ). Could you please be so kind and set your camera on Remote mode and try to fire the flash off camera to see if it works ? If possible could you also try it with SB-800 also in remote? I appreciate your kindness. Thanks
